Employee burnout in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a pressing concern, influenced by various factors such as caseload, billable hour expectations, and lack of support. This presentation explores the multifaceted nature of burnout in ABA and proposes Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) strategies to mitigate its impact.
Caseload and billable hour expectations, often tied to competitive bonuses, create pressure on ABA practitioners. Additionally, the balance between in-person and telehealth sessions, coupled with unsustainable pay and long work hours, exacerbates burnout risk. Working with challenging clients, experiencing little progress or reinforcement, further contributes to emotional exhaustion.
To address burnout effectively, OBM strategies, particularly leveraging the 5 Laws of Life & Leadership (DiNovi & Gavoni, 2021), offer a structured approach. Pinpointing burnout factors and establishing clear expectations aligning with employee goals are crucial. Implementing self-monitoring systems and reciprocal feedback mechanisms, alongside tying pay or other rewards to performance, fosters accountability and motivation.
Moreover, promoting work-life balance and providing opportunities for professional growth are integral. Recognizing early indicators of burnout, such as significant overtime or the number of challenging cases one works, enables a proactive intervention approach. In addition, we will discuss how encouraging autonomy and self-management empowers employees, while fostering a culture of self-care emphasizes well-being.
Participants will:
- Identify 4 factors contributing to employee burnout in ABA settings.
- Recognize how to implement OBM Strategies, in particular the 5 Laws of Life & Leadership, to mitigate employee burnout.
- Identify 3 strategies to help develop a culture of work-life balance and resilience
