Introduction to PCIT:
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a proven approach for Children aged 2-7 dealing with behavior problems like Oppositional Defiant Disorder or ADHD. Through coaching sessions with parents or caregivers, PCIT improves how parents and children interact. This helps children act better and behave positively.
Adapting PCIT for Older Children
- Even if a child is up to 10 years old, PCIT can still be helpful. Every week, there's a special talk with the child to make sure they're heard during the treatment.
- skills for parents change a bit to fit older children better.
Learning in PCIT for Older Children
PCIT has two parts: Child-Directed Interaction (CDI) and Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI).
- In CDI, parents learn play techniques similar to those in play therapy. These skills let parents play with their children, making the parent-child bond stronger. Parents also learn to encourage good actions and decrease bad ones by giving attention.
- In PDI, parents learn to guide their child's actions using clear instructions. They also set fair results to improve their child's listening. Children also learn to handle things better and follow rules.
How Long PCIT Lasts
PCIT takes different times, but families keep going until parents:
- Show they're good at using the skills
- See their child's actions getting better
- Feel sure about using the skills to guide their child
Usually, it lasts around 16 weeks, with one-hour sessions every week.

Can PCIT be adapted for older children, up to 10 years old?
