Identify the "Why" Behind Challenging Behaviors

At Manhattan Psychology Group, we understand that every behavior has a purpose. A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) helps identify the underlying reasons for challenging behaviors so that meaningful, evidence-based interventions can be developed. As part of our comprehensive Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services, our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) conduct individualized assessments to better understand each child's unique needs and develop practical strategies that promote long-term success at home, school, and in the community.
What is a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)?
A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a comprehensive evaluation designed to determine why a challenging behavior is occurring rather than simply addressing the behavior itself. During the assessment, a BCBA examines the environmental events that occur before a behavior (antecedents), the behavior itself, and what happens afterward (consequences). These "ABCs" help identify the function of the behavior and guide the development of effective intervention strategies.
An FBA is often one component of a broader behavioral evaluation and may complement other psychological and developmental assessments when a more complete understanding of a child's strengths and challenges is needed.
When is an FBA Recommended?
A Functional Behavior Assessment may be recommended if your child:
- Frequently engages in behaviors that interfere with learning or daily life
- Demonstrates aggression, self-injury, property destruction, or elopement
- Has difficulty with transitions, routines, or following directions
- Is struggling to make progress despite previous behavioral interventions
- Has been referred by a school, physician, therapist, or educational advocate for a behavioral evaluation
Schools may also recommend an FBA when behaviors significantly impact a student's educational progress or ability to access the classroom environment.
If your child has already been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder or another developmental condition, an FBA can help determine which behavioral supports and ABA therapy services may be most effective.
What Happens During an FBA?
Every assessment is individualized, but the process typically includes:
- A comprehensive review of developmental and behavioral history
- Parent and caregiver interviews
- Collaboration with teachers and other providers
- Direct observations across home, school, or community settings when appropriate
- Collection and analysis of behavioral data
- Identification of patterns, triggers, and maintaining factors
- Evidence-based recommendations tailored to your child's needs
Our clinicians may also utilize standardized ABA assessment tools, including skill assessments and behavioral measures, to better understand your child's abilities and develop personalized recommendations. Throughout the process, we collaborate closely with families, educators, and other providers to ensure recommendations are practical and effective across settings.

What is a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)?
Following the Functional Behavior Assessment, your clinician may recommend a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
A BIP is a personalized, data-driven plan that outlines strategies for reducing challenging behaviors while teaching functional replacement skills that improve independence and daily functioning. Because the plan is based on the findings of the FBA, interventions are designed specifically around your child's needs and the function of the behavior.
A Behavior Intervention Plan may include:
- Strategies to prevent challenging behaviors before they occur
- Positive reinforcement techniques that encourage desired behaviors
- Functional communication training
- Skill-building goals to increase independence
- Recommendations for parents, teachers, and caregivers
- Ongoing data collection and progress monitoring to adjust interventions as needed
When implemented consistently across home, school, and community settings, a BIP can help improve communication, increase adaptive skills, and reduce behaviors that interfere with learning and everyday life. Many families continue with ABA therapy after an FBA to support the successful implementation of these recommendations.
